Here are a couple home videos of Makanja performing in Zambia.

Every member of Makanja grew up steeped in authentic African music. They have been initiated and trained to present Zambian traditional dance and masquerade. They are also masters of contemporary world beat sounds.  In its full electric version, vocals in English and African dialects are backed by guitar, keyboards, bass, and modern drums.

Makanja is from Zambia in South Central Africa, a nation with a thousand year history of peaceful cooperation between 72 tribes. Zambia is about the same area as Texas with half the population density. The former British colony once known as Northern Rhodesia gained independence in 1964 through an unarmed revolution, the Cha-Cha-Cha.

Makanja will tour the western USA beginning in 2024. The tour will focus on five aspects of cultural exchange.

1. Full band performances in arts venues.
2. Traditional “teaser” shows in public spaces.
3. Religious songs in supportive churches.
4. Individual band members staying in local homes for a week.
5. Drum and dance workshops with school presentations.
